It examined the definition of disability found in EU and national law, and the extent to which the concept of reasonable accommodation has been applied to persons with psychosocial disability. It examined the role that EU Law, specifically Directive 2000/78, plays in providing support in the labour market for those who experience mental health problems amounting to a psychosocial disability.
This project produced a report for the European Commission, jointly authored with Professor Lisa Waddington, Maastricht University. The Employment Equality Directive and Supporting People with Psychosocial Disabilities in the Workplace. He has experience of supervising doctoral research in these fields dealing with domestic law, comparative law, and EU law. Mark welcomes inquiries from potential research students in the areas of equality law and employment law. He has previously published research relating to migration law, such as the position of irregular migrants in the labour market. His research interests include comparative equality and employment law issues. He has published extensively on EU equality law, but also on aspects of EU employment law (especially law and precarious work). Mark's research interests lie in the areas of equality, work and migration. His current research examines the relationship between religion and labour law. He has conducted research for the European Commission and the International Labour Organisation, as well as non-governmental organisations. Mark is a member of the Board of Directors of the Irish Centre for European Law the Advisory Board of the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law and the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Discrimination and the Law. He is co-editor of International and European Labour Law: A Commentary (Nomos 2018). Mark has published regularly on Anti-Discrimination Law and Employment Law, particularly in relation to EU Law. Prior to his 2015 appointment at Trinity, he was a professor at the School of Law, University of Leicester, where he was also Head of the School of Law (2011-2014). He was Head of the School of Law (2018-2021). Mark Bell is Regius Professor of Laws (a Chair founded in 1668) and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. Set up in 2019, TriCON hosts a vibrant seminar series which provides a focal point for scholars and practitioners interested in constitutional law from a theoretical, comparative, interdisciplinary and practical perspective. Scholars at the Centre share a broad range of research interests, spanning the fields of constitutional law, comparative constitutional studies, administrative law, human rights, EU law, international public law, democratic theory, legal philosophy and more. The Trinity Centre for Constitutional Law and Governance (TriCON) is a Research Centre based in the School of Law which undertakes and promotes research, teaching and public engagement on all aspects of constitutional law and governance, both in Ireland and across the world.
